Oxidation Behavior of Glassy Carbon in Acidic Electrolyte

Glassy carbon is frequently used in electrochemical research due to its presumed robust performance. Although it widely utilized as a rotating disc electrode material, the modification of glassy during electro-catalytic process rarely emphasized or characterized. In this report, we investigated structural imparted by oxidation acidic media and compared behavior with graphite. The functional groups generated from both electrodes possess similar properties. However, above an potential 1.8 V (vs. reversibly hydrogen electrode), exhibits lower capacitance We propose that existence electrochemically inactive species, originating non-graphitic portion attributed such deterioration. Additionally, high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM) high-resolution transmission (HR-TEM) images corroborate how prevails for at oxidative potentials. overall analysis leads us corrosion mechanism solution.
